 the word Ishan refers to "The Lord Vishnu; The creator of the universe and all other Gods" and the north east direction . Ishaan has its roots in the word "Ish" which means the invisible power that is the universe. The wielder of this power, or this power itself is "Īśāna", Ishwar or Lord Vishnu.

The name gained popularity in the mid 2000's and has become a popular name since. Ishaan is mentioned as Lord Vishnu in the 8th quote of Vishnu Sahasranama "Ishanah pranadah prano jyeshthah sreshthah prajapatih Hiranyagarbho bhugarbho madhavo madhusudanah" Ishanah- in this context means he who controls and regulates everything.
