It's Showtime 2011 Lyon
Encyclopedia
It's Showtime 2011 Lyon was a martial arts
event promoted by the It's Showtime
organization in association with Kader Marouf. The event was held at the Palais des Sports de Gerland
in Lyon, France on Saturday, 14 May, 2011. It was the 48th event hosted by the organization and the first ever to be held in France
. The card was divided into two parts with the undercard featuring four opening fights, two fought under Muay Thai
rules, the others fought under 'It's Showtime' (K-1
) rules, while the main card featured four super fights, including the return of Badr Hari
and two world title fights, one for the 70MAX belt held by Chris Ngimbi
making his first title defence, the other for the inaugural 73MAX belt, all fought under 'It's Showtime' rules. The original fight card suffered several cancellations on the undercard and a late change on the main card, with the unknown Fikri Ameziane replacing the injured Anderson "Braddock" Silva
, who was originally scheduled to face the K-1
star Daniel Ghiţă
after Paul Slowinski
pulled out. In total there were twenty fighters at the event, representing nine countries.
The 70MAX title was successful retained by Chris Ngimbi
who comfortably outclassed Willy Borrel, showing a range of blindingly quick strikes before putting the Frenchman down and out with a flying knee in the second round. This was the first defence by Ngimbi who is fast improving as a fighter. The newly introduced 73MAX title fight was arguably the fight of the night, with Marat Grigorian
taking the early advantage using superior hand speed and aggression to go into an early lead against Yohan Lidon
. This advantage was nullified in the third however, as Lidon scored a high kick knockdown from nowhere, which Marat did well to beat the count. This knockdown would ultimately give Lidon the unanimous points decision, with the Frenchman becoming the first ever It's Showtime 73MAX world champion.
Most of the other matches on the main card were predictably uncompetitive due to the nature of the draw with Daniel Ghiţă
, Tyrone Spong
easily defeating their opponents. In the main event Badr Hari
made his long awaited return to the ring after a self-imposed exile, walking through an excited crowd who seemed to offer much more support to Hari than to the local fighter, his opponant, Gregory Tony
. The fight was actually delayed due to the large amounts of supporters milling around the ring, with referee Joop Ubeda telling the crowd to go back to their seats. The actual match itself was a bit of a disappointment, with a rusty and seemingly scared Tony spending most of his time running from Hari - who won by TKO due to the three knockdown rule in the first round. Hari later apologized to the fans for the spectacle, promising better fights in the future. Other results saw the almost invicible Giorgio Petrosyan
fail to win for the first time since 2007 - although he was well in control before the injury suffered by Chahid Oulad El Hadj
led to the no-contest verdict, while on the undercard the most entertaining fight saw Houcine Bennoui
outclass 'Fight of the Night' regular Mosab Amrani
in what was a minor upset.

who comfortably outclassed Willy Borrel, showing a range of blindingly quick strikes before putting the Frenchman down and out with a flying knee in the second round. This was the first defence by Ngimbi who is fast improving as a fighter. The newly introduced 73MAX title fight was arguably the fight of the night, with Marat Grigorian
