Eccles was signed from local side London Road in March 1890 as a long term replacement for Alf Underwood

. However at just and Eccles looked the complete opposite to the former England international. He became a very 'hard' player though and according to The Sentinal with a little more weight he could have become one of the best Victorian era Full-back's.

He made his debut in 1890 but it took him two full seasons before he became a regular in the side, Eccles went on to spend 10 years at Stoke playing in 166 league games. During his career, Eccles became known for his brave tackling. He retired in 1900 when be became a coach at the club.
