artist Jackson Li is the founder
of the Post Royal china ware movement. Through deconstructing
and reconstructing strategies, Jackson transformed Chinese ceramic
traditions, stimulating people to reevaluate and contemplate the meaning of tradition.

Jackson's works are categorized as Post Royal china ware after 2000,
after then he focuses on reassembling and compressing elements from utilitarian, symbolic,
functional, burial, religious, and folk iconography. These free, tactile, spontaneous
works reflect the long traditions of official ceramic art in China, such as Cizhou
(known for its painted black pottery) and Yaozhou (known for its incised lines on pottery
surfaces) wares.
In contrast to the wide range of wares of the common people,
the "Royal china ware,"was renowned for its requiring of high firing temperature,
elegant, precise, refined character, and quality. In recent years, Jackson devoted himself to
rediscovering and reinterpreting this classic ceramic art of China. He applied these methods in his works,
and the result is his Post Royal china ware.

Jackson is also remarkable in his effort to
preserve and reinterpret the heritage of Chinese culture.

and documenting ceramic masters and artisan families at work and play,
he captures daily life at kiln sites that are on the verge of abandonment.
Through his creative interpretations, Jackson not only informs others about

sparking dialogue in contemporary society.

Jackson Li's Post Royal china ware

Based on the beauty of classicism and its sense of modernism, Post Royal china ware's beauty lies in its
abstraction.
By using all the elements available, Jackson Li return to the traditional, complex methods of porcelain

making and try to replicate the spirit of Royal china ware by using the best materials, hand made processes,
reducing oxygen in the atmosphere at 1350 degrees celsius, selective use of colors, simplified forms, and the
utmost care and craftsmanship applied to each piece. By doing so, Jackson Li have successfully preserved the essence of
traditional Royal china ware's elegance with the spirit of modern mind.

Introduction of traditional Royal china ware

Royal china ware was long regarded as a quintessential example of classical style promoted by
the Imperial Court. It also set the highest standard for the making of ceramics in Chinese history.

Aesthetics of Post Royal china ware

Reinterpreting an old tradition inevitably requires reworking of old forms and
decorative elements. A certain degree of appropriation and overlapping of traditions thus
occurs in Jackson's effort to compress temporal and spatial elements of the rich Chinese
ceramic tradition into his post royal china ware series. Unlike in his earlier works, however, Jackson
pays special attention to precision, elegance, and imperial aesthetics as he transform old
traditions.
He even increased painterly tendencies using the ceramic surface as the painting ground. The four square cup set
for example, can be arranged in any combination. When placed corner-to-corner in a
line, they form an opened album leaf or an unrolled handscroll. In this"picture" is the familiar
Spring Festival again. Extracting elements from the famed scroll, Jackson employs a high vantage point
to allow viewers to "peek" into an ancient world. The intimate, yet paradoxically distant, feeling
created while holding these cups evokes nostalgia and shows his clever re-presentation of not only
the classical royal china ware tradition, but also the time-honored Chinese master painting.

painterly and design talents. In addition to the Spring Festival, which he references a few times,
Jackson also uses the rounded fan shape commonly seen in Southern Song Dynasty

who specialized in peony paintings. Jackson Li also includes peony in his reinterpretation of royal china ware. Silver lines delineate the petals
of this flower that symbolizes wealth in Chinese culture. By simplifying the background color to monochrome
and by using silver, Jackson not only retains the elegance of royal china waree, but also reduces the overly sensuous
colorful peony painted by his Qing dynasty predecessor to attain the spare aesthetic
of the baimiao (plain outline drawing)tradition of the literati class.

Three more categories of works are included in the Post Royal china ware:

Chinese surface decal

Silver lines on a gray ground also evoke the gold and silver ware popular in the Tang dynasty, where the peony was a prominent motif. Patterns that highlight the artist's
sensitive design talent, depictions of animals, another major genre of Chinese painting, and objects emulating
actual things. All of these styles have reference to the past. Chinese surface decal on objects can be traced
back to prehistoric painted pottery. With increasing contact with the Near East, and the West, Persian vine
patterns began to appear in Buddhist cave temple murals, on gold and silver wares, and later on ceramics.
In time they were assimilated into Chinese traditional design patterns. Jackson's peony design, for example,
was partially inspired by Tang Dynasty

gold and silver ware design, which was strongly influenced by Persian art.
Other works reveal only repeated elements that create interesting surface continuity.

Chinese animal paintings

Most Chinese animal paintings depict vibrant, living creatures, in contrast to the dead rabbits and other
game in Western still life genres. Jackson extracts from these creatures distinctive features, and carefully
arranges them so viewers can identify the species. A symbol of longevity, the Manchurian crane, painted on a

serves, uniquely, as the elegant "body"
of the crane.

Chinese insects paintings

Though not as auspicious as the crane, insects are a special subgenre in Chinese animal painting. In recent memory,
the famed painter Qi Baishi

earned the moniker "people's painter" for his effort in focusing on insignificant animals and bringing
them to the paper medium. Likewise, Jackson brought these tiny lives to the surfaces of elegant Post Royal china ware, bridging
the gap between the imperial and the masses. If one goal of Post-Classicism is to preserve and promote classic
aesthetics, Jackson has achieved this goal by bringing in ultra-refined depictions, like those by Qi Baishi

New Folk pottery

Jackson Li' recent artwork series are Folk Pottery. Folk Pottery is as complex as
Chinese culture itself. In each and every piece of ware such as water vessels, wine
containers, dough-making bowls, and rice bowls, you can detect the signs of handcraft, the
different styles of decoration, the spontaneity of designs, and the richness of texture due
to a variety of firing methods.

 captures the spontaneity
and variety of traditional ware and also incorporates our own contemporary sensitivity and emotional expression.

Pottery was once intertwined with daily life. Brewing a pot of tea, eating rice from a bowl, pouring
a cup of wine, even setting a dish on the table—these routines all incorporated ceramic
works of beauty and function. As technology progresses and changes the way we live, the role that
ceramics plays in our daily rituals has diminished.

There are countless ceramic wares in the world of Folk Pottery. Pieces range from water jars to
wine flasks and basins to pots of various sorts. They display handcrafted lines and markings,
images and scenes from daily life painted on the surfaces and a spectrum of shades and nuances
resulting from glaze firings and materials used.
The Folk Pottery ceramic pieces embody both
simplicity and splendor, carrying the weight of heritage and tradition and contributing to the
spirit of Folk Pottery.

Jackson Li'love for Folk Pottery and dedication to ceramics compels him to sit at his potter's wheel
and focus his efforts into each individual cup, bowl and pot that he created. In expressing his
sentiments for Folk Pottery, he hope to reconnect others with the art of the people.

Wood Firing artwork

Jackson Li'The wood-firing kiln and studio at Sanbao was founded in 2000.
The kiln fire has been burning for ten years. It has evolved from a simple wood firing kiln to a mound-type kiln, to a dragon kiln, to a terrace-type kiln, as a continuous exploration of
the language of ceramic making. The knowledge we have gathered is the fruit of many years of experiments
with temperature control, firing methods, and clay making.
All the raw materials are taken from nature and never contain any harmful chemicals, and therefore never pose a threat to human health.

Handmade artwork

For centuries, hand-making porcelain

on wheels was the traditional craft and livelihood of many Chinese.
In today's world, that hand-made tradition has become a luxury.
At SanBao Jackson Li try to bring that luxury back into people's daily lives by doing everything
the old-fashioned way; from kneading, to forming, throwing, finishing and finally glazing and firing, every step correlates to nature's way of sustaining and producing.
By creating ceramics, Jackson Li tell us how to co-exist with nature and how to explore its potential. Each cup and bowl we make is a testament to our commitment to that valuable tradition.

Conclusion

What Jackson has achieved demonstrates that ancient ways can be renewed.
Otherwise, we would only need to satisfy our aesthetic requirements with reproductions produced by Jingdezhen workshops.
Jackson's work from the 1990s to date has elevated not only the firing temperatures (from stoneware to porcelain

),
but also artistic refinement (from regional traditions to the Royal tradition). He enhances our understanding that
tradition and modernity are not mutually exclusive; they can complement each other. They can elevate and strengthen
cultural subjectivity. Localism in the wake of globalization is to promote self-identity, and Jackson's effort and
achievements are remarkable and respectable.

Jiansheng Li's ceramic sculpture establishes him as an individual artist. His work is bold and vigorous, projecting stature beyond its actual size. It is, most assuredly, at odds with the typical beauty of classic Chinese ceramics. Li's ceramic art is spontaneous, intuitive, impulsive, more like rare calligraphy than refined object.
Jiansheng Li uses clay as essential mud. For Li, clay is visceral, tactile, earth, our earth, transformed by fire into timeless quotes of romantic longing—longing that is reminiscent of Tang and Sung poetry. Landscape, architecture, the figure and intimacy of human vulnerability intertwine in Li's work to conjure history, lyric, sorrow and distant Chinese mythological realms and grace.

Dale Neese

Clay persons from around the world have had an unforgettable experience working and living the Chinese ceramic lifestyle at SanBao. When I first visited SanBao it was one building and a dream. Only the sounds of nature and the water hammers pounding feldspar in the distant valley. Now it has grown into a world wide recognized institute for Ceramics where I hope to return some day to complete a 3 month residency living and working in a historical atmosphere of the oldest ceramic traditions.

An-yi Pan

Contemporary ceramic artist Jackson Li is remarkable in his ambition to
preserve and reinterpret the heritage of Chinese culture.
More importantly, through his creative interpretation, Jackson not only redefines traditional
Chinese ceramic heritage, but also repackages it, creating resonance and sparking dialogue in
contemporary society.
