James Carey is an American inventor and entrepreneur and the founder of SiOnyx, a company that fabricates sensitive light detectors using "black silicon", a material he discovered while a graduate student at Harvard University
. He holds a BS from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard. In 2009 he was recognized by the MIT Technology Review for his efforts by being listed in the TR35
