James Coutts Michie

James Coutts Michie Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy
(19 July 1859 – 18 December 1919) was a Scottish painter
who specialised in landscapes and portraits.
He was born Marywell near Aboyne
, Scotland
, the third son of a merchant, Harry Michie, and Elizabeth Coutts. He studied under Joseph Farquharson
at the Trustee Academy in Edinburgh
and later with Carolus-Duran
in Paris
. He travelled widely on the continent and north Africa before settling in England about 1893. His paintings include, An Autumn Landscape, Normandy Orchard, Gathering Firewood, Snow Scene, Autumn and portraits of David Murray (painter) (1897) and Elizabeth Crombie Duthie (1885). In 1883 Elizabeth Crombie Duthie gave Duthie Park
to the city of Aberdeen
in memory of her uncle and brother. James became a key member of the Aberdeen Artist's Society from the late 1880s. Later he became an adviser to the collector George McCulloch
and married his widow, Mary, in 1908.
Coutts died at Cambledon, near the family home at Haslemere
