After leaving Congress, he was appointed one of the trustees of the New Hampshire Insane Asylum in 1845 and he resumed the practice of medicine. He was one of the organizers of the Rochester Bank, and served as president until his death in Rochester, New Hampshire in 1859. He was buried in the Old Cemetery.
