James Hornsby High School

The James Hornsby High School is a secondary school and specialist sports college in Laindon
, Essex of the United Kingdom. The current school headteacher is Chris Hayes was appointed after the departure of Gill Thomas, headmistress of the school between 2006 till 2010. In 2005 James Hornsby was recorded as the 69th most improved secondary schools in the country by the then Department of Further Education and Schools.
A school magazine has also been established and published by the students of the media studies department the magazine is called The Hornsby Healrd. The school has many sports teams and takes part in many events each year.
The performing arts students also put on various shows throughout the year within school and in local theatres.
Before being called The James Hornsby High School, the school on the present site was called St Nicholas School. It became The James Hornsby High School, when St Nicholas School amalgamated with The Laindon School circa 1998.
Once students reach key stage 4 (Years 10 & 11) they choose the lessons that they wish to carry on learning. They must continue English, Maths, Science, PE & IT. CPSHE & RE are also a required subject of the curriculum but are taught a term at a time.
Key stage 3 options and 2 reserves include:
The main three-story building houses the English & Media, science, maths and IT departments. The science laboratories had major refurbishment in summer 2010.
The main building also has a series of one story floor blocks which house the language, visual arts, PE, health & social care, music and dance departments.
The reception, cafeteria, library and staff offices are also located in the main building.
The second building is named the "Humanities Block".
This building also has a main 3 story block which houses the history, geography, RE, classical civilisations.
The humanities building also has another block within containing two IT rooms, drama, resistant materials, food technology, graphic design and public services departments.
The "servery" is also located in the humanities block which is an alternative food vendor to the cafeteria.
A third building has been added to the campus, opened in October 2010.
The school also boasts a sports hall, gymnasium, 2 performing arts studios, large assembly hall and a swimming pool.
In July 2010 the sports hall went under work to make a new corridor and extension which was completed in December 2010.
The new extension has been designed to meet Disability Discrimination Act Guidelines. The extension has two floors, the top floor acting as a further class room and observation room into the Sports Hall. In the lower floor there is a disabled toilet and another observation room for the Swimming Pool that is hired out to clientele.

In 2011 another huge undergo will be happening to the sports areas extra Boys and Girls changing rooms are being built to imporve the schools sports area.

Name
The school was named after one of the Puckles Charity School's longest serving teachers and the last; a Mr James Hornsby who taught at the school for 48 years and is buried along with his three wives outside the Priest house and former school, on the side of the 13th century church, St Nicholas, in Laindon, Basildon, Essex.Before being called The James Hornsby High School, the school on the present site was called St Nicholas School. It became The James Hornsby High School, when St Nicholas School amalgamated with The Laindon School circa 1998.
