Scott joined the Royal Navy in August 1803 on board HMS Phaeton under Captain George Cockburn
. On 3 May 1819, he married Caroline Ann. He was promoted to Captain on 8 January 1828. He wrote the three-volume Recollections of Naval Life (1834). On 29 June 1841, Scott was nominated a CB. He was promoted to Admiral on 10 February 1865. He was made a KCB on 10 November 1862. He died at Cheltenham
