. From 1962-65 Bishop Malone attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council
. Pope Paul VI appointed him the third bishop of Youngstown on May 2, 1968, following the death of Bishop Walsh. He served the diocese as its bishop for 27 years. From 1983-86 Bishop Malone served as the President of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops/United States Catholic Conference
. On December 5, 1995 Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation and he became Bishop Emeritus.
