in The Faculty of Arts and Architecture at the time, and wanted to pursue a career as an artist, whilst Donohoe "did science", but was coaxed into joining the band along with guitarist Matthew Swinnerton, with whom he worked in a clothes shop.
Hornsmith's trademark style is marked with flat powerful basslines, a clean tone brought about by his Rickenbacker
bass, and his use of the pick. He does not use any effects pedals. He is a vegetarian. He is a supporter of the animal rights group Viva! and in an interview with Viva! Hornsmith said “It’s not just a moral thing but a health thing too,” says Jamie. “You should think about everything you eat. People who do this seem to really like it - it gives you a certain amount of discipline in your life”
