at the University of Portland

He was voted to the WCC All-Freshman Team as a rookie in 2007, was named to the All-WCC First Team as a junior in 2009 and as a senior in 2010. vanSchaik led his team in his senior year with eight goals and three assists, and finished his college career with 13 goals and 14 assists in over 70 games for the Pilots.
During his college years vanSchaik also played in the USL Premier Development League
for the Portland Timbers U23's
, and had the honor of scoring that team's first ever goal in a competitive match, a 2-2 tie with the Victoria Highlanders
on May 9, 2009.
