He continued as the finance minister of the state for 9 years and presented the annual state budget a record 9 times. He was made home minister after the previous home minister resigned.
As a Home minister, Jayant Patil was responsible for initiating Force One, Maharashtra's anti-terrorism Quick Response Team. He took over the reins of the Rural Development Department in 2009.
He has won the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha
