Jean de Louvres was the principal architect of the papal chapels in Avignon constructed in the mid-fourteenth century. He designed an innovative staircase, wide and well lit, incorporating several landings. One of these landings had the special purpose for Pope Clement VI
to overlook the courtyard below and offer indulgences to the faithful on All Saints Day.
