In 2006, Schare and his partner, Detective Kurt Ballman, were awarded the Hamilton County Police Association’s Detective of the Year Award for solving the 44-year-old unsolved murder of Patrolman Donald Martin. Schare and Ballman were the subjects of a chapter in the book Ohio Confidential: Sex, Scandal, Murder, and Mayhem in the Buckeye State, which dealt with the murder of Patrolman Martin and their efforts in solving the case.
