Jeffersonville High School

Jeffersonville High School, home of the red devils, was founded in 1871-1872. Originally located in downtown Jeffersonville, Indiana, in the early 1970s a new, larger campus was constructed on the outer eastern edge of the city. It is one of the largest high schools in Indiana, with a student enrollment for the 2007-2008 year of 2,079, the 24th highest population of Indiana high schools, allowing for it compete on the 5A level in the IHSAA.[1]
In 1870, the city of Jeffersonville, Indiana started its high school by teaching teenage boys at the Chestnut Street School, with the girls segregated to another location. In 1874 the sexes were combined, with the principal of Chestnut, E. S. Hopkins, in charge. The first 5 years saw a student populous of 82. Greek, German, and Latin languages were taught, with the latter two required for graduation.[2] In 1882, a new building was built at Chestnut and Pearl.[3]
The construction of the current building started in 1969, and opened in 1971. The movement from the downtown area, near the City-County building, to the outskirts of the city showed the trend of the city's population to live outside of downtown. [4]
It has a prominent theatre program that has sent seven shows to the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska, one which continued to the Fringe Festival in Scotland.
It has an Air Force Junior ROTC program that has won awards for its color guard.
The wrestling team has had impressive runs, starting with the senior class of 2008 including Dominique Smith, Richard Hayes, and Marc Fridley.
The swim team has shown a strong presence over the past 10 years, with state champion swimmer Ben Hesen and diver Marsh Lindley.
The Jeffersonville High School Wind Symphony competed at the state level of ISSMA in 2007.
Jeff High also holds an impressive record of boys' sectional track wins with 38 wins in a row.[5]
