Jeffrey "Jeff" Atwater, a fifth-generation Floridian, was elected Florida's Chief Financial Officer is currently the Chief Financial Officer of Florida. CFO Atwater's belief that Florida can best prosper through its people rather than its government is the cornerstone of his platform to reduce the burden on Florida's families by spending every taxpayer dime in the most efficient and effective manner. He will:

1. reduce government spending,
2. reduce regulatory burdens that chase away capital,
3. provide transparency and accountability in spending,
4. protect the state's financial investments,
5. fight fraud, abuse and waste in government

He is a Republican and former member of the Florida Senate, representing the 25th District. In 2008, after chairing high profile Senate committees, he gained the unanimous support of his fellow Senators in becoming President of the Florida Senate, and his term ended in 2010. His district included Palm Beach and Broward counties. Previously, he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 through 2002 and served as Vice Mayor of North Palm Beach in 1993.

Atwater moved to Florida at the age of 4 and grew up in North Palm Beach, Florida, where his father, a veteran World War II pilot and FBI Agent, served as Police Chief. He went on to gain substantial experience in banking, more than 25 years. He served as chairman, president and CEO of the Barnett Bank of Broward County and the Treasure Coast, and later as Market President of Riverside National Bank for Palm Beach and Broward counties.

Jeff Atwater’s background provides him with a unique insight into legislative issues pertaining to banking, insurance, finance and fiscal responsibility.

Florida's CFO serves as one of three constitutionally elected state executives of the Florida Cabinet, which consists of the Chief Financial Officer, the Attorney General, and the Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The Governor and Cabinet serve as a board of directors, or agency heads, governing such matters as the purchase of state lands; clemency matters; state bond, trust and fund management; veterans' affairs; state law enforcement administration; tax collection; power plant and transmission line sitings; and financial and insurance regulation for the state of Florida.

Florida's CFO oversees the state's accounting and auditing functions and unclaimed property, monitors the investment of state funds and manages the deferred compensation program and risk management program for the state.

Insurance consumer service is handled by the CFO, and the office is responsible for the licensing and oversight of insurance agents and agencies, as well as funeral homes and cemeteries.
Insurance fraud investigation also is overseen by the CFO, as well as ensuring businesses have workers' compensation coverage in place for employees and helping injured workers with benefit payments and re-employment.

The state's CFO also serves as Florida's State Fire Marshal. The Division of State Fire Marshal is a sworn law enforcement agency that provides various fire-related services throughout the state, from assisting local fire departments by conducting arson investigations to training citizens at one of the finest fire-training colleges in the state.
