Coleman revealed in a Daily Mirror interview on 2 December 2008 how she was left emotionally shattered and physically bruised after filming an Emmerdale scene in which her character murders her boyfriend, Shane Doyle, played by Paul McEwan, after he tried to rape her, saying, "It was really violent. I had marks on my body where Paul held me down. He was shoving me about but I told him to go for it. I wanted it to look as realistic as possible. But I was really scared of him in that moment. Afterwards, I ached all over and we couldn’t look at each other." She also revealed that she will be taking a break from Emmerdale in 2009, saying, "I’ve been here three-and-a-half years and it’s my first proper job so I’m itching to do something else."

In May 2009 it was announced that Coleman would be joining BBC drama Waterloo Road
