Treglown was educated at Bristol Grammar School
and St Peter's College, Oxford
. He was a lecturer in English Literature for several years, and in 1979 joined the
Times Literary Supplement, where he was editor from 1981 to 1990.
His biography of V.S Pritchett was shortlisted for the 2004 Whitbread Award
for biography and for the Duff Cooper Prize
. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature

In 1970 he married Rona Bower. They were divorced in 1982, and in 1984 he married Holly Eley (née Urquhart) (1940-2010), an assistant editor at the TLS.
