Encyclopedia
Jetstar Japan is a low fare domestic Japan
ese airline
that will start service in late 2012. It is owned by Qantas
(42%), Japan Airlines
(42%), and Mitsubishi Corp
(16%). It will fly to Kansai International Airport
and Tokyo Narita Airport as well as Sapporo, Fukuoka
, and Okinawa, and short haul services to other Asian cities.
The initial fleet will consist of 3 A320 jets with the goal of 24 jets all in 180 seat single class configuration.
Total capitalization commitment for the new airline is up to ¥12 billion.
This was announced as part of a new Qantas strategy to restructure its loss making international business. The Pilots Union asserts that Qantas International is not a loss making business but rather that the airline has been subsidising Jetstar to make it look more profitable than it actually is. By making Jetstar appear more profitable with the Qantas International business's subsidies, Qantas is aiming to use Jetstar Japan like Jetconnect in New Zealand to get around the Superannuation levy for Australian staff.
