Jewish Community Centre for London
Encyclopedia
The Jewish Community Centre for London, or JCC for London, is a charitable organisation that aims to provide a way into, or back into, active Jewish life for all of London’s Jewish community.

Ethos and activies

The JCC for London celebrates Jewish culture inclusively: it’s aimed at anyone interested in Jewish life and Jewish activities, from Jewish food to sport to Jewish arts to debate, with activties that emphasise the Jewish tradition of helping those in need. It is not a place of worship, nor linked to any particular group, movement or synagogue. The JCC for London actively welcomes observant and secular Jews, mixed partnerships, and non-Jews. Indeed, an important part of our vision is to create better understanding between different faiths and cultures. The JCC for London is part of the wider and well established JCC Movement.

The programme of London-based Jewish activities often take place in partnership with others organisations and include a sell-out Israeli rock concert at the Southbank Centre, the Kvetch Choir, a podcast in association with The Guardian, yoga and cycling activities, children’s events, political debate and a series of social action projects.

Background and organisation

Dame Vivien Duffield posed the idea for a JCC in London following a visit to the Jewish Community Centres of North America in 2002and the charity was established in 2004 with the events programme beginning the following year. Members of the JCC for London board include Bernie Bulkin, Sir Trevor Chinn, Lloyd Dorfman CBE, Dame Vivien Duffield DBE, and Debbie Klein. A separate sister company, JCC Ventures, has been set up to manage the development of the new cultural centre in North London.
