Herrera made his professional debut with Chilean club Universidad de Chile (locally known as the "U") in 1999. He went on to play 122 games with the "U" in the seven years he spent with the club. In 1999 and 2000, Herrera won the Chilean First Division championships, and in 2004 he won the Apertura tournament with "La U".
