Berry was born in Chicago on January 16, 1932 and attended Dartmouth University and Ohio Wesleyan.

In 1961, Berry began working for the Newspaper Enterprise Association.

His most notable work may well be the comic strip, Berry's World
Berry's World
Berry's World was the title of a daily newspaper comic strip by Jim Berry which ran from 1963 through 2003. Berry received the National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award for 1965, 1966, and 1972 for his work on the strip.-References:...

, which ran for more than 40 years beginning in 1963. It is even more notable that he never missed a deadline for that strip in all that time. The National Headliner Award was presented to Berry in 1967. Berry won the National Cartoonists Society
