Puckett was the 100 yard dash state "B" champion three times, from 1956-1958. His time of 9.6 seconds in 1958 at the state meet is the fastest time in the event for any high school sprinter in the history of high school track in Oregon

Puckett was also a two-time state "B" champion in the 220-yard dash in 1957 and 1958 and won a state long jump
