It is 455.1 km long, with a basin area of 45000 square kilometers. The river's flow varies greatly throughout the year, and in its basin soil erosion is serious. In summer floods, it is sediment-laden; in the dry season, the river water is relatively clear.

Its source is at Mount Liupan in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and it flows through Gansu
