in 1978. The distance of the Main Reef Stakes was cut to 1 mile in 1989, having been set previously at 1 mile and 2 furlongs.
Jim Joel died in 1992, and the race was renamed the Joel Stakes in 1994. Its status was raised to Group 3 in 2003, and to Group 2 in 2011. It is now held on the second day of Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting.
The Joel Stakes is currently sponsored by Shadwell
