She was born at Reinfeld
into a conservative aristocratic family famed for its devoted pietism. Her parents were Heinrich von Puttkamer and Luitgarde Agnes von Glasenapp. Johanna married German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck
on 28 July 1847 in Alt-Kolziglow (modern Kołczygłowy) near Reinfeld. They had three children: two sons, Herbert
(b. 1849) and Wilhelm
(b. 1852), and one daughter, Marie (b. 1847).
Johanna died on 27 November 1894 in Varzin at the age of 70 years.
