In 2005, Ball signed with the Rochester Raging Rhinos
of the USL-1. Additions to the Rhinos midfield during 2008 saw Ball transition to a defensive role where he was a regular starter at right back. It had been announced on the team website just prior to the 2009 season that John Ball has signed a one-year deal with the Rhinos for 2009, where he is expected to continue his role in the back line. Due to a near complete overhaul of the Rochester Rhinos prior to the 2010 season, John Ball was not re-signed by the team.
