He was born in Orkney, the son of Robert Yorston and Mary Toulis, and was educated there. Yorston married Isabella J. Y. Fea in 1898; she died later that same year. In 1909, he married Janet Mary Robertson. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1909 and in 1924. Yorston died in Cariboo at the age of 69.
