Encyclopedia
John McBain is a fictional character
on the American
daytime drama
One Life to Live
, portrayed by Michael Easton
since October 1, 2003.
in October 2003 and involves Cristian Vega
in an undercover operation. After Cristian marries Natalie Buchanan
, the couple head to Las Vegas
, where Cristian is killed by mobster Walker Laurence. John soon grows close to widow Natalie, who initially blames John for Cris' death; they begin to fall for each other, but their relationship is complicated by the memory of Cristian and what had happened to him. Meanwhile, John (now working for the Llanview Police Department) bonds with attorney Evangeline Williamson
, who is dating club owner R.J. Gannon
. Evangeline kisses a surprised John when he dares her to — for once — act without thinking. Working and spending more time together, John and Evangeline's attraction to each other grows. Trapped in a basement together, they give in to passion; when R.J. confronts her about the amount of time she spends with John, Evangeline ends her relationship with R.J., partly because he has been following her around town. John and Evangeline attempt to stay away from each other, but soon decide to continue their relationship — as adults, with no strings attached. Evangeline surprises John with a visit, and finds him playing cards with Natalie on his bed. An upset Evangeline runs out but John follows, assuring her that he and Natalie are just friends, and asking Evangeline not to give up on them. When Evangeline later admits that she needs more from him, John agrees to "attach strings," and they begin officially dating.
In November 2004, with John and Natalie's relationship solidified into friendship and John dating Evangeline, a man looking exactly like Cristian turns up alive. Amnesiac Cristian, his identity in question, has been programmed in captivity to kill his brother, Antonio Vega
; he resists, but is eventually revealed to be the killer of evil Tico Santi, his maternal cousin, who had wreaked havoc for many of Cristian's loved ones. As memories of his former life begin to return, Cristian accepts the consequences of his actions and goes to jail. To help Natalie and his family move on, he pretends that he is, in fact, an impostor. John discovers the truth but Cristian swears him to secrecy. Keeping Cristian's true identity from Natalie proves difficult, as his feelings for her continue to linger in spite of his relationship with Evangeline. When Evangeline tells him she loves him, John isn't able to say the same. Soon after, John and Evangeline break things off.
Eventually, John moves on to date Natalie, though he still fells guilt knowing Cristian's identity and not telling Natalie. Things begin to grow even more complicated when Evangeline becomes Cristian's lawyer in an attempt to get his prison sentence appealed, and discovers that he is indeed Cristian. In November 2005, a prison riot led by Carlo Hesser
breaks out and John and Cristian are caught in the crossfire as Natalie discovers that Cristian is indeed Cristian. Although John and Cristian make it out alive, Natalie is angry at both of them for lying to her, and no longer wants anything to do with either of them.
Natalie soon realizes that she has fallen for John, and officially divorces Cristian. John becomes consumed with solving the decades-old murder of his father, police officer Thomas McBain. The unsolved crime has plagued John for years, but new evidence begins to surface, which leads to David Vickers
, Dr. Paige Miller, and ultimately, Dr. Spencer Truman
. On the day of Spencer's arrest, John is able to finally find peace with his father's death, and has asked his mother to give him her engagement ring (from his father) for Natalie. But John is soon involved in a terrible car pile-up on the highway — he is killed, his body burned beyond recognition. The town mourns his death and prays that ADA Hugh Hughes (also in the accident) will survive. On November 10, 2006 it is revealed that Hugh, badly burned and bandaged in a burn unit, is in fact John McBain. He ultimately recovers, aided by some tender loving care by Natalie. During his recovery, he tells Natalie that he loves her. John's relationship with Natalie, a fledgling forensics expert, ends in 2007. Believing she is protecting John, she tampers with evidence at the crime scene of Spencer's murder. With John unable to get past the difficulties of his recovery and Natalie's overprotectiveness, she breaks up with him in April 2007.
and her son Cole Thornhart
in 2007, eventually helping her get out of her forced marriage to Miles Laurence
. On September 12, 2007, John is suspended from the police department, pending investigation into his role in withholding information about the true parentage of Tommy McBain. Tommy, the adopted son of John's younger brother Dr. Michael McBain
and his wife Marcie, is Todd Manning
's biological son, thought murdered by Spencer Truman
; when the truth comes out and Todd is awarded custody, Marcie flees town with the child. Though they dislike each other, John and Todd join up to pursue her across the country, as John wants to catch up with Marcie before Lee Ramsey, John's unpredictable FBI rival who is in charge of the case. When John and Todd end up in jail, Marty and Todd's ex-wife Blair Cramer
arrive to bail them out, and to join in the search for Marcie. John and Marty bond further as Marty confesses to John that her deceased husband, Patrick Thornhart
, had been murdered. John and Marty make love, but Marty soon disappears in New Orleans, and Cole vanishes from Llanview. With Marty and Cole kidnapped by the Irish terrorists who had killed Patrick, John and Lee follow. Their plan goes awry, and though Cole is saved, a van explodes with Marty inside on December 4, 2007, and she is presumed dead.
John and Blair fall into bed together and begin a relationship, but the events surrounding Ramsey's death in June 2008 leave John with questions about Todd's involvement. John pieces together that Ramsey had a mystery woman staying with him, and soon deduces that she is now with Todd. Todd plays the hero to an amnesia
c Marty, secretly saved and nursed back to health by Ramsey, but in a twisted pursuit of redemption, Todd fails to tell Marty that he had raped her years before, or that she has a son. She begins to fall in love with Todd, and he for her. On November 10, 2008, John breaks into Todd's home and finds Marty, soon realizing what Todd has been up to. The truth revealed to her, Marty lashes out, John beats Todd to a bloody pulp, and Todd is arrested. With Marty's return and John's obvious concern for her, Blair gives John the opportunity to end their relationship on good terms; he reassures Blair that he is committed to their blossoming relationship. Todd is charged with kidnapping and rape; Marty is grilled on the stand by Todd's lawyer and ex-wife Téa Delgado
, her testimony actually used to exonerate Todd. Devastated, an unraveling Marty sets a plan in motion; professing to still love him, she lures a repentant and hopeful Todd to a New Year's celebration for two. On the roof of the Palace Hotel on January 2, 2009, she admits her deception and urges him to do the one thing that will make her happy: jump. He steps off the edge, and plummets into the water below. John pulls Todd out on January 5, 2009; Blair is relieved for the sake of her children, but Marty is furious.
Killings take place in early 2009, with letters left on the bodies that spell out KAD, Todd's old fraternity, where he, Powell Lord and Zach Rosen raped Marty, when they were in college. Blair is the first to be attacked and not die, and Todd is a possible suspect in the case. Blair fears she will lose her children, so her lawyer Tea Delgado
suggests she marry John, which surprises them both. After some talking John proposes to Blair and she accepts. She is also granted custody of their children. In August, they plan to get an annulment, but he has the papers changed to say divorce, because he wants it on record that his first marriage was Blair. Reconnecting with Marty since his divorce, John learned on March 12, 2010 that Marty is pregnant with his child from Natalie who congratulates him, not realizing he did not know. After she leaves, Marty arrives and he questions her about it. They discuss it and he reassures her that while he has no idea what he's doing, he wants to have the baby with her, she's very happy and relieved. On April 19, 2010 after being pushed down the stairs, Marty and John discover that their baby has been miscarried.
. After Bo and Nora's wedding, Natalie and John make love to each other. On August 4th, Natalie tells John she is pregnant and does not tell him about Brody maybe being the father. On January 3, 2011, during John and Natalie's wedding, Marty crashes it trying to spill the Paternity results that Brody was supposedly the father. Jessica goes into labor, so John and Brody take her to the hospital. John goes to look for Natalie at the cabin. Natalie gives birth to her son, who is later named Liam Asa McBain. During the double wedding for Natalie and John and Jessica and Brody, the truth comes out. Vimal admits that Clint had sent him to change Rex Balsom
's paternity test and that he changed Jessica's. He also says that both daughters had a paternity test. John takes Natalie to another room, and he forces her to tell the truth. He leaves Natalie, and gets drunk with Kelly Cramer
. He sleeps with Kelly and Natalie walks in on them. She lays into John and Kelly, and John tells her that those two sleeping together was not a mistake. She tells him she'll never give up on him. After getting some advice from Echo DiSavoy
, he goes to see Liam. He and Nat bond over him, but John runs into Kelly at llanfair and they hug. Natalie and Joey lay into Kelly and John, then fists fly. Joey punches John because of his jealousy and him hurting Natalie. He visits Marty, who tries to tell him something about Liam. He explains to her what happened and she is extremely happy. After he leaves, Marty whispers to herself..." Looks like the plan is working. To bad John had to lose his son in the process." It is unclear if she changed the paternity test for Liam, because Marty had walked in on Vimal changing Jessica and Rex's paternity test. There is a chance she may have changed Liam's paternity test. John and Kelly have another ONS again, but this time Roxy walks in. He sleeps with Kelly again, and Natalie lashes out at him after walking in on the two and after she finds out he fire Gigi. She returns to the job and lashes out at him once again. She lays boundaries down and they agree to be strictly professional while on the job. Kelly "conveniently" interrupts. Natalie is furious, but does the right thing and walks away.
Later on in the show, Marty announces to her psychiatrist, Dr. Buhari that she ultimately changed the paternity result of Liam from John to Brody. She did not want Natalie to have a perfect world so she had to change the results. As John and Kelly get more serious, Marty starts to get an obsession over John, until it gets deadly.
Natalie then steals the session tape of Marty and her phyciatrist and listens to what Marty has to say. She then learns this whole time she has been mothering the child of John and not Brody. On May 11,2011, Marty stabs Kelly to get her out of her way to be with John, and Natalie, in an effort to tell John the truth about Liam's paternity goes to John's apartment. She finds a note Marty had left for him, telling him to go to the roof and she goes up to the roof. She encounters Marty and they begin to fight, Marty being armed with a knife.
John comes home to his apartment to find Kelly bleeding out in his bathroom and he takes her to the hospital. Kelly tells John that she heard Natalie's voice in the apartment, and so he goes back to the apartment in search of Natalie. When he arrives, he finds an unconscious Natalie laying on the pavement and he is in total shock.
While John takes Natalie to the hospital who only has minor injuries from being pushed by Marty off the roof, Brody goes in search of Liam who was on the roof at the time with Natalie. Marty knocks him out with a glass bottle and she kidnapps Liam and is on the run. Natalie has short term memory loss and cannot remember why she had gone to the roof in the first place so Liam's paternity still remains a mystery to everyone except Marty. Months later, John ends his relationship with Kelly to reunite with Natalie, only to find that she has moved on with Brody.
On September 23rd 2011, Brody proposed to Natalie and she accepts. It is also revealed on that day that John plans to tell Natalie that he is still in love with her but he is unaware that she is engaged to Brody. It is also revealed that Tea Delgado has the original paternity test, however she is totally unaware. Later on Tina's dog, David Vickers, finds the test, and it ends up in Tina's dog carrier, and Jessica stumbles upon it. Jessica is considering everybody's feelings, Natalie's, John's, Liam's, and even Brody's. As of October 3rd 2011, Brody, Vimal, Jack, Marty, and Jessica know about Liam's paternity.
that Liam is his son. At first, he doesn't believe her but then after thinking about it has realizes that it's true. But when he and Natalie leave the airport to go see Liam, they make a horrifying discovery: Nigel unconscious and Liam not in his crib. When Nigel comes to he tells them that Brody
knocked him out and kidnapped Liam. They finally catch up to Brody and Liam in Niles, Michigan (where Brody grew up). But when they get to the house Brody pulls a gun them but they get him to drop the weapon and give Liam to John. They return to Llanview with Liam in time for Thanksgiving.
