Following his period in the army, Moreton joined the Diplomatic Service. His career included appointments as Ambassador from the United Kingdom to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (1969-71) and British High Commissioner to Malta (1972-74).He was appointed CMG in 1966 and KCMG in 1978, and KCVO
