Phillips is educated to BSc level in Sport and Exercise Science and has an MSc in Physiology. Before leaving for Sweden Phillips worked a coach at Southampton F.C.

youth academy as well as for England national youth teams and with female players as well as doing some work for the Football League. In 2008 he left England to become fitness coach at Swedish side Malmö FF.
In 2010 he moved on to Al Ahli Dubai.
