John Randolph Tucker High School
Encyclopedia
John Randolph Tucker High School is a high school
in Henrico County, Virginia
, United States
. It is named after lawyer and Henrico County Judge John Randolph Tucker. Its students and faculty often refer to themselves as "Tucker Tigers". The school had approximately 1700 students and over 145 faculty members during the 2009-10 school year.
The school also offers Marine Corps JROTC commanded by LtCol. James O'Dwyer and SgtMajor Clayborne Hartsel and advanced placement courses
Tucker now includes the IB program. The IB program will go full capacity in the school year 2012-2013 with approximately 145 students in the IB program. The two previous classes have had anywhere from 35-50 students accepted. The first IB senior class will be in the school year 2013-2014.
Tucker is now introducing a new program called the Advanced College Academy. When you graduate in the program, you receive 60 credits from J Sarge to be put towards any public school in Virginia. It also guarantees admission to any public school in Virginia if you graduate from the program with a B average or higher. Tucker High School is fully accredited.
As a result of Tucker taking on a new specialty center every year, this has required for the school to spend more money on those specific things, meaning that the school must cut the budget somewhere. This is why the ACA program and the IB program are a main reason that the French Immerion program has been removed from curiculum. It is also true that less and less students were joining French Immerion every year, so these two new specialty centers cannot be the only ones to blame.
In the 2009-10 school year, Building #10 was used as a "Freshman Academy" called Tiger Hall.
The Drama and Chorus departments received new teachers in 2005. Lisa Dyer, who was the Dance coach at Hermitage High School in 2004, is now the head of the Drama department at Tucker. She has directed productions such as Bye Bye Birdie, The Boyfriend, Man of LaMancha, Annie, Once Upon a Mattress, Aida, and Steel Magnolias. Since 2005, Tucker's Chorus department has been headed by Clint Miller. Mr. Miller directs five different choruses:
on campus. The Tigers have not been as successful at football
as in other sports. They have made it to the playoffs only once in their 48-year history, a 39-3 loss to Thomas Dale
in the 1992 playoffs.
