In January 2008, the college went through OFSTED , who reported back that John Smeaton Community College was "A good school with outstanding features" [according to the John Smeaton Community College Profile, Published 20 October 2008]. The school was reconstructed, the construction beginning in 2004 and completing in 2007, in association with Leeds City Council
and a privately owned business. The multi-million pound project was a great success and is said to be one of the main reasons why the school has improved so greatly in recent years, rising to the top of the Leeds schools leaderboards and cementing its place as one of the most improved schools in the country.
The school was re-opened in 2008 by Scot, John Smeaton
, made famous as a hero during the attempted terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport
