John Taylor Hughes was an Anglican Suffragan bishop
in the mid 20th century. Born on the 12th of April 1908 he was educated firstly in Uxbridge
and subsequently at Bede College,University of Durham
. He took Holy Orders
in 1931 and was successively an assistant chaplain and tutor at his alma mater
, a curate at Shildon
and a Vicar at West Hartlepool
. Returning to his home city in 1948 Hughes became the Warden of Southwark Diocesan Retreat House and a Missioner of the cathedral
. In 1957 he became Bishop of Croydon,a post he was to hold for over 20 years; additionally taking on the role of Bishop to the Armed Forces from 1966.
In 1964 he published What difference does faith make? He died on the 21st of July 2001.
