John Upton was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons
at various times between 1625 and 1641.
Upton was born at Lupton, Devon, the son of Arthur Upton and his wife Gertrude Fortescue daughter of Hugh Fortescue of Filleigh. In 1625, he was elected Member of Parliament
for Dartmouth
. He was re-elected MP for Dartmouth in 1626 and 1628 and sat until 1629 when King Charles decided to rule without parliament for eleven years.
In April 1640, Upton was re-elected MP for Dartmouth in the Short Parliament
. He was re-elected for the Long Parliament
in November 1640, but died the following year.
Upton married Dorothy Rous, daughter of Sir Anthony Rous
. His grandson John Upton was also MP for Dartmouth.
