 concert, Goudie started his first band, which he called ZEPHYR, and decided to pursue a career in music. His family was supportive (his father had also been a singer in a band). On October 13, 1985, when Johnny was 16, his mother, Natalie Antonetti, was beaten over the head in her apartment. She died 18 days later. The crime went unsolved for 23 years until a tip led police to arrest Antonetti's ex-boyfriend Dennis Davis. On April 15, 2011 Davis was convicted of the murder. The traumatic loss of his mother had a profound influence on Goudie's subsequent songwriting.

On April 10, 1994 Johnny married Traci Campbell in Austin. The couple were married for ten years. Goudie's divorce was the subject of many of the songs on his 2005 album Boy in a Box.

Post-Goudie career

After the breakup of his band, Goudie returned to his biggest passion: writing and recording songs in his home studio. He independently released an album of self-recorded demos
