Jonas Virakas

Jonas Virakas was born in Seredžius
town of Kaunas district. He studied at Kaunas Art School, work as sketch-maker for the architect Vladimiras Dubeneckis
till 1934 and continued architecture
studies at Kaunas Art Institute from 1940. From 1942, J. Virakas started teaching design and architectural drawing
as well as interior design and decoration at Kaunas Art Institute.
From 1944, he became the Dean of the Decorative Architecture Department. From 1949, the architect worked at Kaunas Fine Art Workshop for more than thirty years. Virakas has created a number interiors of drug-stores, civil registry offices, halls, and bookstores. His exceptional work is the interior design of Tulpė cafe in Kaunas and central bookstore in Kaunas. The interiors created by this artist are remarkable for the simplicity, logical and constructive distribution of space, usage of decoration elements.
Jonas Virakas died in Kaunas
on April 30, 1988 and is buried in Karmelavos graveyard.
