Membership

JCL draws its members from University of Iowa College of Law students who have completed their second semester of studies. As with the other journals at the College of Law, JCL members are selected through an anonymous, competitive write-on process that exercises the applicant's writing and editing skills. The journal's application process is highly selective, and it invites 25-30 applicants each summer to become Student Writers for the following academic year.

Student Writers must complete thirty-five secondary hours each semester. Secondary hours can be completed by taking on Journal-related projects, typically assigned by the production staff, and by attendance at authority checks. The secondary hours requirement helps Student Writers build upon their editing and writing skills, and also allows JCL to produce a high quality publication.

Rankings

The most recent ranking of corporate law journals by the ExpressO Law Review Submission Guide placed JCL as the highest ranked journal in the field. According to the Washington and Lee Law Journal Rankings, JCL is the second-ranked student-edited corporate law journal in the country.
