. Submissions were accepted in English
or French
and no limit was placed on the length of submissions. Volumes 1-7 (1975–1981) were published exclusively in microfiche format; there was no print version. Volumes 8-14 (1982–1989) were published in a combination of microfiche and print formats. Shorter pieces were published in the print volume and longer contributions were included in a microfiche supplement to each volume. The combination of formats was complicated and not well accepted, and in 1990 the journal was reorganized as the Journal of Philosophical Research in print format. Electronic access for institutions was launched in 1997, and all print issues of both journals are available online. The content of the microfiche issues is being converted to electronic format by the Philosophy Documentation Center. The journal continues to provide a venue for works such as bibliographies, translations, and commentaries that are difficult to publish in journals because of unusual length or complex format.

The journal was first published in 1975 as an experimental journal known as the Philosophy Research Archives.
