Encyclopedia
Jugraj Singh, born in 1983 to a Sikh family in Punjab. A self coached drag-flicker who became a youth icon for anybody who ever followed Indian Hockey or Hockey in general. Iconic drag flicker’, young face of the India hockey team’, the spirit of Indian hockey and brave fighter’ are synonymous for Jugraj Singh. To refresh your memory, he is the courageous athlete who made the inspirational return to hockey after major car accident. The nationwide outpouring of public sentiment and concern for ace defender Jugraj Singh, who was seriously injured in a road accident amply demonstrated people’s love for the hockey, stars. He played a pivotal role in taking Indian hockey to the new heights by winning the junior world cup, 2003 Champions Trophy, followed by Asian Championship. He was considered to be the next Sohail Abbas by many experts but that car accident at the age of 20 never allowed him to be the same Jugraj ever. In a series against Pakistan where he performed so well that his counterpart Sohail Abbas said that he can see a younger Sohail in him.
After that crash he tried to make it to the national team but never went further than the probable list. He was still a very good player and played for Chandigarh Dynamos with a decent record in PHL. Few years back he was given an opportunity to coach Junior National team for Penalty corners at the national camp. He picked four players out of that team and one of them is today India's brightest drag-flicker 'Rupinder Pal Singh'. "I did not achieve this overnight. My drag flick coach Jugraj has worked hard for that. I owe my success to him," Rupinder said. He added "Sohail Abbas is brilliant drag flicker. He has the world record against his name but if Jugraj did not meet with an accident in 2003, he might have been the record holder.”
