Encyclopedia
Jung Sung-Ryong is a South Korea
n football
goalkeeper, who currently plays for the South Korean national team and Suwon Bluewings
in the K-League
. He is known for his quick reflexes, his ability to intercept crosses, and his very effective shot-stopping. He also has extremely good kicking and distribution skills.
He is praised for the way he keeps extremely calm under massive pressure. He also has a very commanding presence. Jung used to be the understudy to South Korean legend Lee Woon Jae, but Lee's retirement made Jung South Korea's first choice goalkeeper. In the 2010 World Cup, he played in all four of South Korea's games and conceded eight goals in four matches. He has been criticized for not communicating with his defenders well and his seemingly inability to save penalties, but since then Jung has greatly improved his goalkeeping skills and has arguably blossomed into Asia's best goalkeeper.
In the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, Jung played in all six of South Korea's games and conceded seven goals in six matches. He has become even better since then.
On 28 January 2011, it was announced that Jung had joined Suwon Bluewings
on a five year deal for undisclosed fee.
