Before becoming KGBT-FM, the station was KQXX with studios in the Casa de Palmas Hotel in McAllen. KQXX went on the air Oct. 4, 1966. Under its original ownership, KQXX went from easy listening to country and western and Spanish language. One of the founders was Ed Gomez, a local radio and TV personality who went on be elected Hidalgo County Judge.
