KQCK
Encyclopedia
KQCK, channel 33, is a television station
licensed to Cheyenne, Wyoming
. It is currently owned by Fusion Communications and is a VasalloVision
affiliate, serving both the Aurora and Denver markets. The station's transmitter is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of Cheyenne, just outside Fort Collins, Colorado
.
in Casper
, at that time an NBC
affiliate. This made Cheyenne one of the last markets in the nation to get full over-the-air network service. Prior to 1987, NBC had been relegated to off-hours clearances on KGWN-TV
, though Denver's KCNC-TV
had been available in the area for decades on cable.
On September 1, 2003, NBC moved its Casper affiliation from KTWO to KCWY
. Although KTWO temporarily became an independent station at that time in order to wait for the expiration of KFNB
's ABC affiliation, KKTU was able to immediately switch from NBC to ABC, and began branding itself as ABC 8, after its position on the Cheyenne cable system.
On May 31, 2005, KKTU changed its call sign to KDEV, with plans on expanding to the nearby Denver market. Indeed, it built its digital tower in Fort Collins, in the Denver market.
On May 31, 2006, Equity Broadcasting
sold KTWO to Silverton Media. Equity retained ownership of KDEV, but signed a marketing agreement with Silverton to operate it as a satellite of KTWO. Equity later moved the ABC affiliation in Cheyenne to a low-powered repeater, KKTU-LP channel 40, and replaced ABC on KDEV with programming from its in-house classic television network, the Retro Television Network
.
By June 8, 2008, KDEV's analog signal had reverted to its previous ABC affiliation and ABC 8 branding, and simulcast it on its second digital subchannel and on KKTU-LP.
On June 17, 2008, the station changed its call sign to KQCK.
Equipment failure forced the station to shut down its analog operations on June 27, 2008, but the digital signal and cable carriage remained. Due to the cost of repairing the analog facilities, and the proximity of the end of the DTV transition, KQCK requested to end analog transmission altogether. ABC programming remained on KQCK-DT2 and what had become KDEV-LP until 2009, when KTWO was picked up by Fox
affiliate KLWY
on its digital subcarrier.
On January 4, 2009, a contract conflict between Equity and Luken Communications, L.L.C. (who had acquired RTN in June of 2008) interrupted the programming on many RTN affiliates. As a result, Luken moved RTN operations to its headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee
, and dropped all Equity-owned affiliates, including KQCK, immediately. RTN would eventually sign with KCDO-TV that May. KQCK then switched first to AMGTV
, and later to @SportsTV.
At auction on April 16, 2009, KQCK was bought by Valley Bank along with two other outlets for $7 million. Valley Bank, in turn, filed to sell KQCK and KQDK-CA
in Aurora, Colorado
to an ownership group connected to Fusion Communications on September 9.
In January 2010, KQCK joined VasalloVision. On September 15, 2010 KDEV (after being off the air for several days) reemerged as a My Network TV affliate.
