 in the Top-40 market in the mid 1980s as KZZC (ZZ-99), but to no success. In 1987, The Wave debuted, becoming one of a multitude of adult contemporary stations. However that station also did not last, against longtime competitors KUDL and KMXV

Since debuting in April of 1992, The Rock has lived up to its name in the stability of its format, surviving a rock format shuffle in 1997 that claimed Kansas City's (then) longest-surviving (23 years) FM rock station, KYYS "KY-102". Despite its success, the station has seen several program directors come and go, including the late Doug Sorensen (The Rock's very first PD), Greg Stevens, Vince Richards and Neal Mirsky. The station's current PD, Bob Edwards, has been at the helm since March of 2003.

  • 98.9 The Rock Music – 12 am to 5 am
  • The Johnny Dare Morning Show (Johnny Dare, Jennifer Johnson, T-Bone, Jake the Phone Snake, & Gregg) – 5 am to 10 am -- The format of this show is consistent and long running. Johnny interviews guests where he kisses ass then talks shit after they are no longer on the phone. It is widely believed that T-Bone's eventual mental collapse will be brought on by Johnny's trash talking on him and his family. It is unknown if T-Bones break down will include Johnny or not but will surely be fun to watch.

  • Jason Nivens – 3 pm to 7 pm
  • Ryan Westward – 7 pm to 12 am
