K. M. Chandrasekhar was born in Kerala to Kesava Menon, who was Chairman of the Railway Service Commission. After graduating from St Stephens College in New Delhi, he got an MA in history from the University of Delhi. He then earned his M.A. in Management Studies from the University of Leeds

Personal life

K. M. Chandrasekhar is married to Jaya Chandrasekhar. They only have a daughter who now heads the Automotive Component Manufacturers' Association in Bangalore. She is a mechanical engineer from IIT Chennai and management graduate from IIM Bangalore.
