Kairat Kelimbetov served as the Minister of Economy and Budget Planning in the Government of Kazakhstan
. In late July 2005 Minister Kelimbetov announced that Kazakhstan's GDP grew by 9.1% in the last year.
In December of 2009, the Associated Press news agency reported that "KazatomProm", one of the companies managed by the National Well-Being Fund "Samruk-Kazyna" was close to clinching a deal with Iran to clandestinely export 1,350 tons of purified uranium ore from Kazakhstan".
AP reported that Iran was willing to pay $450 million to secure the deal, which involved Kazakh state employees acting on their own without the approval of the Kazakh government.
Mr.Kairat Kelimbetov is the Chairman of the Board of "Samruk-Kazyna" and controls all significant dealings of the portfolio companies, including "KazatomProm". He is not a member of the Kazakh government.
