Kakinada is a city and a municipal corporation
in the India

. It is located 465 kilometres (289 mi) east of the state capital, Hyderabad. It is also the headquarters of East Godavari district. It is nicknamed "Fertilizer City" (owing to the large concentration of fertilizer plants), "Pensioner's Paradise" and "Second Madras" (as it is well planned and peaceful). The city had an urban population of 376,861 in 2001, making it the eighth largest city in Andhra Pradesh
by population. It is spread over an area of 190 km2.
Kakinada is part of a Special Economic Zone
and a proposed "Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR)". It is a hub to all the deep sea exploratory activity in the region due to its deep-water sea port and its proximity to the gas fields.

The city has roughly a north-south orientation and is confined to a long narrow strip parallel to the sea coast. The average width of the city is around 6 km but its length is around 15 km. . The weather is hot and humid for most of the year. The hottest part of the year is late May to early June with maximum temperatures around 38–42 °C (100–108 °F). The coolest part of the year is January, with minimum temperatures around 18–20 °C (64–68 °F). The city gets most of its seasonal rainfall from the south-west monsoon winds although a good deal of rains greet these parts during the northeast monsoon from mid-October to mid-December. Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal frequently hit the city. Prevailing winds in Kakinada are usually southwesterly for most part of the year except during October to January when they blow north-easterly. The city experiences an average annual rainfall between 110 and 115 centimeters.

There is a proposal to develop the road between Kakinada and Suryapet via Rajahmundry into a National Highway which will reduce the distance between Kakinada and Hyderabad.

is also working on setting up a similar facility near Mallavaram village south of Kakinada.

Reliance Gas Transportation Infrastructure Ltd (RGTIL) has built a 1,440 km pipeline from Kakinada to Bharuch
(Gujarat) to transport 120 million cubic meters per day (mcmd) of natural gas from Krishna-Godavari fields owned by Reliance Industries across India to the west coast.
In 2010, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board awarded the City Gas Distribution project for Kakinada city to Bhagyanagar Gas Limited, a consortium of GAIL

Spectrum Power Generation Ltd. has a 208MW power plant at Kakinada. In fact, it was one of the first Independent Power Producer
in the country. The company is planning to expand the capacity to 1350 MW in phases. Tenders for the first phase of expansion to the tune of 350 MW have been called for recently.
GMR Energy has erected a 220 MW barge mounted FPP (floating power plant), towed from its earlier location, Mangalore
due to the abundant availability of Natural Gas in this region. A 220 MW Power Station (currently being scaled upwards to 2400 MW at a cost of Rs 10000 Cr) owned by Reliance Energy Limited, and a 464 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant by GVK group are under operation at Samalkota
(Kakinada Rural). All these private power plants supply electricity to the state's transmission utility, AP TRANSCO, under a Power Purchase Agreement

Since the inception of the facility, several companies have started operations in this city and list is growing due to availability of highly educated workforce in the district.
About 28 companies are currently operating in Kakinada with a total employee base of around 1200. Total turnover of IT/ITES from Kakinada is around Rs 15 Crore during the last fiscal year. Godavari IT Association of East and West Godavari districts (GITA) is an association of IT companies in the twin Godavari districts which is based out of the city.

The CIFE is the first fisheries university in India and provides post-graduate education and training, to in-service fisheries personnel not only from India but also many African and Asian countries.

Andhra University Post Graduate Centre (called A.U.M.S.N. PG Centre), established in November 1977, is another important college for higher learning in Kakinada. This University center is located between Kakinada Port – Samalkot ADB Road on a 50.93 acres (206,106.6 m²) campus in Thimmapuram. The campus is six kilometers from Kakinada Town Railway Station.

People of Kakinada enjoy spending the hot summers in the shallow waters of Bay of Bengal. As tides are not intense and as the water is shallow people enjoy playing in the waters of Bay of Bengal. Chittajallu Srinivasa Rao better known as C. S. Rao (b: 1924 – d: 2004) is a South Indian actor, writer and director.[1] He is son of famous film director Chittajallu Pullayya. He has directed about 70 films in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Oriya languages. He is best known as the director of the Magnum Opus film of Telugu cinema Lava Kusha (1963)
2. C. Pullaiah
– Telugu film director.
Chittajallu Pullaiah popularly known as C. Pullaiah (Telugu: సి.పుల్లయ్య) (b: 1898 – d: 6 October 1967) is an eminent Telugu film director. He is one among those film personalities associated with the Telugu movie right from its silent movie days. His son C. S. Rao is also famous film director in later period.
Sati Anasuya, the first children's movie in Telugu cinema was directed by him. Pullaiah made it with sixty child artistes. He took them all to Calcutta along with a teacher, so that their studies might not be interrupted. Hi wife Rangamma ran a small diary to meet the need for milk, butter-milk and butter for the children. The sixty children regarded Pullaiah as their father.
Pullaiah directed Vara Vikrayam and Malathi Madhavam under the East India Film Company at Calcutta. He directed Bala Nagamma, Apoorva Sahodarargal and Vindhya Rani under Gemini Pictures after shifting base to Madras.
He is well remembered as the maker of Magnum opus Telugu film Lava Kusha in 1934 and 1963, the story of Lava and Kusha in Hindu epic Ramayana.
Pakkinti Ammayi (1953) the forerunner of Bollywood film Padosan (1968) is directed by him and starring Padmasri Relangi Venkataramaiah
3. Suryakantham

Suryakantham Ponnada (Telugu: సూర్యకాంతం) (28 October 1924 – 18 December 1994) was an Indian actress in Tollywood. Suryakantham was born in Kakinada of East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh to a telugu Niyogi family. She was the 14th child to her parents, while ten children had died. She learnt dance and singing at a tender age of six. She was married to Peddibhotla Chalapathi Rao, a High Court Judge, in 1950.
Suryakantham started as a dancer in Chandralekha, produced by the Gemini Studios. She got her first role as character artist in the 1946 film Narada Naradhi.
Later, she got a character artist role in the movie Grihapravesam. Later, she consolidated her position by playing the role of a cruel mother-in-law in Samsaram. 1953 film, Kodarikam boosted her career to new heights. Ace directors of the era, B. Nagi Reddy and Chakrapani would not do a movie without Suryakantham. They had even produced a movie Gundamma Katha, starring N.T. Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao and S.V. Ranga Rao. The entire story would revolve around Suryakantham's role of Gundamma.
4. Rao Gopal Rao

Rao Gopal Rao (Telugu: రావు గోపాల రావు) (14 January 1937 – 13 August 1994) was a popular Tollywood Character actor and producer and member of Rajya Sabha. Rao Gopal Rao was born in 1937 in Ganganapalli near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. He started his career onstage, with his own company, Associated Amateur Drama Company and did many plays under the banner. S. V. Ranga Rao saw his plays and recommended him to Gutta Ramineedu, who was making Bhakta Potana (1966). He worked as an assistant director for this film. He served as an assistant director in other films, including Bangaru Sankellu and Mooga Prema.
Rao was the main villain in the film Jagat Kiladilu (1969), which starred Krishna. Rao's voice was dubbed over at the request of the film crew. Rao became better known after the release of Muthyala Muggu, directed by Bapu. Other Bapu films to feature Rao included Bhakta Kannappa (1976), Gorantadiipam (1978), Manavoori Pandavulu (1978), Kaliyuga Ravanasurudu (1980), Tyagayya (1981),Abhilasha (1983),Khaidi (1983),Challenge (1984), Jaakii (1985), and Bullet (1985). Rao produced several films, including Station Master, Lorry Driver, Bhargva Ramudu, and Vintadongalu.

Etymology
Several theories exist regarding the origin of the name Kakinada. One is that the place was called 'Kakinandiwada' during the reign of Nandi kings who ruled prior to the arrival of the Europeans and the name was truncated to Kakinada over time. The British used to call it Cocanada . After Independence, the name was renaturalized to Kakinada, although a few organisations established during the British colonial rule retain the old name (e.g., Cocanada Chamber of Commerce). As a city located on the sea shore, Kakinada is a railway terminus. It has four railway stations, namely Kakinada Town Junction (1.2 km), Kakinada Port (1.8 km), Kakinada Port New (4.1 km), and Sarpavaram (6.5 km).Through a branch line, Kakinada is connected to Samalkot Junction (13 km) which is on the Chennai-Howrah trunk line, where almost all express trains stop to connect Kakinada with the important places of the country.There are direct daily trains running to Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Tirupati, Shirdi(tri weekly) and Bhavnagar (weekly) and also special trains running all through the year to Hyderabad and Ernakulam.There is a demand for construction of the long waited Kakinada – Pitapuram railway line of 21 km length which connects Kakinada to the main line apart from extending the Kakinada-Kotipalli railway line to Narsapur which will bring rail connectivity to Konaseema region.
Road
Good roads connect Kakinada with all the places within the state and rest of the country. NH-214 from Kathipudi to Ongole (both on NH-5) passes through Kakinada. A couple of state highways connect Kakinada to Rajahmundry and other places within the district.There is a proposal to develop the road between Kakinada and Suryapet via Rajahmundry into a National Highway which will reduce the distance between Kakinada and Hyderabad.
Economy
In the late 1940s (around the time of Indian independence) there was little industry in or around Kakinada, and the local economy consisted mainly of agriculture and fishing. Until the early 1980s (before the fertilizer companies started their operation here), the local economy was mainly based on the textile industry, auto parts, steel industry related ancillary units, agriculture and fishery industries. Chittajallu Pullaiah popularly known as C. Pullaiah (Telugu: సి.పుల్లయ్య) (b: 1898 – d: 6 October 1967) is an eminent Telugu film director. He is one among those film personalities associated with the Telugu movie right from its silent movie days. His son C. S. Rao is also famous film director in later period.
Sati Anasuya, the first children's movie in Telugu cinema was directed by him. Pullaiah made it with sixty child artistes. He took them all to Calcutta along with a teacher, so that their studies might not be interrupted. Hi wife Rangamma ran a small diary to meet the need for milk, butter-milk and butter for the children. The sixty children regarded Pullaiah as their father.
Pullaiah directed Vara Vikrayam and Malathi Madhavam under the East India Film Company at Calcutta. He directed Bala Nagamma, Apoorva Sahodarargal and Vindhya Rani under Gemini Pictures after shifting base to Madras.
He is well remembered as the maker of Magnum opus Telugu film Lava Kusha in 1934 and 1963, the story of Lava and Kusha in Hindu epic Ramayana.

Suryakantham Ponnada (Telugu: సూర్యకాంతం) (28 October 1924 – 18 December 1994) was an Indian actress in Tollywood. Suryakantham was born in Kakinada of East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh to a telugu Niyogi family. She was the 14th child to her parents, while ten children had died. She learnt dance and singing at a tender age of six. She was married to Peddibhotla Chalapathi Rao, a High Court Judge, in 1950.
Suryakantham started as a dancer in Chandralekha, produced by the Gemini Studios. She got her first role as character artist in the 1946 film Narada Naradhi.
Later, she got a character artist role in the movie Grihapravesam. Later, she consolidated her position by playing the role of a cruel mother-in-law in Samsaram. 1953 film, Kodarikam boosted her career to new heights. Ace directors of the era, B. Nagi Reddy and Chakrapani would not do a movie without Suryakantham. They had even produced a movie Gundamma Katha, starring N.T. Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao and S.V. Ranga Rao. The entire story would revolve around Suryakantham's role of Gundamma.

Rao Gopal Rao (Telugu: రావు గోపాల రావు) (14 January 1937 – 13 August 1994) was a popular Tollywood Character actor and producer and member of Rajya Sabha. Rao Gopal Rao was born in 1937 in Ganganapalli near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. He started his career onstage, with his own company, Associated Amateur Drama Company and did many plays under the banner. S. V. Ranga Rao saw his plays and recommended him to Gutta Ramineedu, who was making Bhakta Potana (1966). He worked as an assistant director for this film. He served as an assistant director in other films, including Bangaru Sankellu and Mooga Prema.
Rao was the main villain in the film Jagat Kiladilu (1969), which starred Krishna. Rao's voice was dubbed over at the request of the film crew. Rao became better known after the release of Muthyala Muggu, directed by Bapu. Other Bapu films to feature Rao included Bhakta Kannappa (1976), Gorantadiipam (1978), Manavoori Pandavulu (1978), Kaliyuga Ravanasurudu (1980), Tyagayya (1981),Abhilasha (1983),Khaidi (1983),Challenge (1984), Jaakii (1985), and Bullet (1985).
