Encyclopedia
The Kambaratinsk Dam is the sixth planned dam on the Naryn River
in central Kyrgyzstan
. It will be one of the largest dams in the world at the time of its completion, standing approximately 275 metres (902.2 ft) high and containing about 370000000 cubic metres (483,941,729.1 cu yd) of rock and earth. The hydroelectric power plant at the base of the dam will generate 2,000 MW.
The unconventional construction method of the dam will be primarily aided by approximately 440,000 tons of explosives, which will cause landslides that will dam the Naryn River. Before the explosions occur, the hydroelectric power plant, diversion tunnels and other appurtenant structures will have been completed.
