. The settlement grew up around the Kariyangwe Mission, the first to be set up by the Spanish missionaries that arrived in the country in 1949. The people are Matonga. It has a Hospital powered by solar cells and now there is electricity.The mission has its own primary school, a kilometer away from the primary school is a High school which produces best results in the district. The area also have got an irrigation scheme which get water supply from the local dam known as Lungwalaala Dam. The irrigation is being used by the local population though it is not producing well,
